Abstract :  Production of ordinary Portland cement leads to high CO2 emissions worldwide. Moreover, the high demand for cement in the construction sector, dearth of raw materials and high production costs associated with conventional cement have made it essential for concrete paver block industry to search for alternative materials. Recent studies have shown that sugarcane bagasse ash - a waste from the sugar industry - has the potential to be used as a supplementary cementitious material after the application of a suitable processing scheme. Instead of disposal as a waste, utilization of bagasse ash in concrete as a pozzolanic addition leads to direct economic and environmental benefits. Although bagasse ash blended cements are reported to show very good performance in terms of strength and durability, use of bagasse ash blended cement in concrete paver blocks is not reported in the existing literature. In the present study, sugarcane bagasse ash was processed based on well-developed scheme and then mixed with cement in different proportions to produce blended cements. These blended cements were used to produce light to medium traffic grade interlocking concrete paver blocks and the performance was comprehensively evaluated as per standards in terms of compressive and flexural strength, water absorption, permeability and abrasion resistance. Results from the study showed high strength, significant reduction in permeability and better performance compared to conventional concrete paver blocks.
