Abstract :  The state of the art analysis and design of important infrastructure projects are performed for appropriate combination of static and dynamic forces which include the gravity loads, seismic forces, wind, as applicable. Assessment of soil structure interaction forms an essential part of such analyses. The various commercial finite element softwares are used for modeling, analysis and design of important structures. In complex structures FE modeling might result in mismatched edges for concrete walls and raft foundations. To establish a methodology for assigning the joint soil spring constant values for such systems this paper proposes that the contributory area for a node be calculated as the area between the perpendicular bisectors of the lines connecting the adjacent nodes. The proposed methodology when applied for analysis of a representative structure using SAP2000 software is found to be reasonably accurate. The ‘edge constraint’ option enable efficient modeling even when conformal meshing cannot be maintained. It is suggested that the joint spring option should be used in cases where the lift-off analysis is envisaged as the area springs would not allow removal of the springs in tension.
