Abstract :  A precast wall-type building is constructed by stacking precast wall panels and slabs with different types of joints. Based on location, joints are classified as horizontal joint and vertical joint. The present research programme studied the in-plane shear behaviour of vertical joints. A total of thirteen jointed wall panel specimens were tested to study the behaviour of vertical joints, under in-plane direct shear loading. The parameters considered in this study were type of transverse reinforcement (U-bars or loops), configuration of joint surface (plane, castellated and castellated with edge lips) and spacing of transverse reinforcement. Analytical expressions were developed to predict the shear load versus slip behaviour for each type of joint. These expressions can be used for analysis of computational models of precast wall type buildings, through modelling of shear springs between the wall elements. The test results and proposed expressions are reported in this paper.
