Abstract : Modern built environment consists of concrete as the most widely used construction material. It has become a material of choice for the construction industry for its easy availability, proven track record of producing safe, durable and economical buildings & infrastructure. However lapses, oversight or lack of understanding at different stages of the life cycle of a concrete structure may result in problems that could potentially affect its durability, serviceability & sustainability. Design mistakes, construction lapses, corrupt practices, poor maintenance practices, changes in service or environmental conditions, lack of accountability etc, could be the contributing factors to the deterioration of concrete structures. This paper focuses on the problems faced by concrete structures during their service lives and some means to overcome these problems to maintain/ enhance their durability & sustainability.
