Abstract : The recent advent of the electro-mechanical impedance (EMI) technique for structural health monitoring (SHM) has provided a new paradigm to diagnose the onset of the damage at the incipient stage itself. The objective of the paper is to emphasize upon the basics of the SHM based on the EMI technique using piezo sensors, its need and its applications, followed by the recent advances made in this area.
