Abstract :  Structures are inanimate objects, hence there is no sharp line of demarcation between life and death, and; definition of life depends solely on the context. Concepts of life and service life of structures are introduced first in this paper. Limits defining termination of life are elaborated. Design philosophies adopted to ensure the required life for new structures are introduced and role of performance based approach is highlighted. Performance testing in newly constructed structures and in existing old structures are discussed. The possible mechanisms those bring about the termination are then discussed along with relevant models for prediction Possibility of transforming the results in to an index for decision making tool and life assessment is discussed at the end and summarized.
