Abstract :  Composite columns are being increasingly used in recent years in high rise structures, especially in seismic regions. This paper presents an investigation carried out on the structural level performance of a typical multistorey framed building subjected to seismic loads considering four alternative material schemes for the columns viz., concrete, steel and two types of steel-concrete composites (concrete-encased and concrete-infilled). The framed structure is modelled as 3D space frame and analyzed for seismic forces by equivalent static method of IS: 1893 using ETABS software package. The results are compared in terms of critical earthquake response parameters such as base shear, maximum storey drifts, roof displacements, storey-overturning moments and sectional efficiency parameters like axial load levels, steel contribution ratios and utilization ratios. It is found that the buildings with composite columns exhibit favourable seismic performance.
