Abstract :  Concrete is the most widely used material in the world and it has to play a critical role in ensuring sustainable development of the planet in the near future. For this purpose, concrete’s resilience and versatility need to be aligned with sustainable values of stewardship of natural and financial resources, safety and stability. The authors suggest that multi-disciplinary and collaborative R&D efforts are needed on a continuing basis to fulfill this broad objective. The authors recommend adoption of strength-cementitious material-water relation, involving two non-dimensional parameters (fc/fm & w/cm), which are neutral of the effects of ingredients characteristics and quantities on the hydration kinetics which in turn affect the target concrete performance. Some emerging needs of research are also highlighted in the paper. These include usage of sea water as mixing and curing agent, cement replacement with waste glass powder and glass cullet as aggregate, nano-additives/cement, static segregation, microstructure improvement of concrete system, etc.
