Abstract :  The U.S. law allows the use of innovative materials when an "Evaluation Report" is available, produced by certified laboratories, and based on acceptance criteria issued by the organization ICC-ES. In particular, minimum requirements have been established in the document AC434 for the characterization of FRCM composite systems for structural reinforcement of reinforced concrete elements and masonry. The evaluated characteristics include: the properties of FRCMs and their endurance to axial, bending, and cutting stresses; the behaviour of FRCMs when exposed to the environment and fire, and structural test procedures. This paper focuses first on the study of material features and then gets to discuss the effect that reinforcement material has on reinforced concrete structural elements and masonry.
