Abstract :  A nuclear power plant (NPP) involves complex civil engineering structures operating in demanding environments that have the potential to challenge the level of safety (safety margins) necessary throughout its life cycle. Concrete is the commonly used civil engineering construction material in the nuclear industry because of a number of its advantageous properties. The increasing concern about the safety of the public and the environment with time and the degradation of concrete structures due to ageing related phenomena led to a significant evolution of material concrete used in NPP. The evolution may be viewed to occur in three phases: (i) early phase, (ii) mid phase and (iii) current phase. A comprehensive account of the three phases of the evolution of structural concrete in nuclear industries will be presented in the paper along with observations on the future trend.
