Abstract :  South African consumers are much used to brick and block construction and this perception extends to the banking sector which is responsible for the financing of housing and infrastructure in general. This paper explores the driving force behind the establishment of new and innovative building systems in the market. Some of the new building systems and solutions are described with and compared with standard systems. The basis for compliance deemed to satisfy requirements as given in SANS 10400 are discussed. The basic assessments required for technical acceptability are explained. The roles and responsibilities of Agrément South Africa and the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) in getting new building systems approved are discussed. Such approvals are the first step towards getting a financial backing as well as municipality approvals for new building systems. Are all the new systems relevant and necessary? The paper addresses the issues.
