Abstract : How important is having not only the required acoustical environment but also noise control in design of buildings? Various buildings such as classrooms, office spaces, auditoriums, hospitals, factories, and multi-story dwellings should meet the required acoustical criteria. The design of Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) systems, ducts, pipes, walls, floors, ceilings and doors should ensure that the space in the buildings enhances the acoustical use of the buildings. Such acoustically designed environment in buildings not only satisfies communication needs but also improves the quality of life. This study presents the importance of acoustics in design of buildings and discusses the various approaches used in designing required acoustical environments in buildings.
